Living above sin is not just God’s desire for every believer, it is also an instruction.
For example, the bible says;
…Be ye holy; for I am holy.
1 Peter 1:16 (KJV).
It is important for us to understand how God has equipped us to do His word or obey his commands. Living out God’s command becomes doubly difficult when this understanding is lacking.
Staying away from sin is often a problem for many of God’s children because they are struggling against it in their own might. Just imagine for a moment that Jesus had to take the form of a man and die just to free us from sin. That should tell us how serious the matter is, but more than that, it should tell us that it is not something we could ever do on our own.
The first step to living over sin is recognizing your need for God’s help and depending solely on that help. Now, the Holy Ghost is our helper. That help includes His enabling power that helps us live a holy life – above sin.
Remember, the Bible clearly explains the frailty of human strength.
Not by power or might, by MY SPIRIT says the LORD of hosts.
(Zachariah 4:6)
So it is empowerment from the Spirit that enables us to live above sin. Consequently, it is important to be filled with the Spirit. That infilling of the Spirit of God is the only lasting solution.
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)
Those who are filled with the spirit cannot but walk in the Spirit, and when one walks in the Spirit, he will not gratify the desires of the flesh(sin). It follows that the less filled we are with the Spirit, the more prone we are to give in to temptation and sin.
This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
Galatians 5:16.
In order to fulfil the instruction to walk in the Spirit, we must constantly be filled with the Spirit. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is the first step and the only means by which we are able to walk consistently in the Spirit and live above sin.
